Arg of Karim Khan (ARG-E KARIM KHAN ZAND) :
The citadel of Karim Khan ( Arg Karim Khan Zand in shiraz ) was built as part of a complex during the Zand dynasty and it was named after Karim Khan Zand (The founder of dynasty) serving as his main residence. At first look it resembles a medieval fortress. In some periods in history, the citadel was used as a prison. Today it is turned into a museum, operated by Cultural Heritage Organization.
Arg Karim Khan was built AH (1766-7) in 1180. Karim Khan invited the best architects and artists of the time, to build it. He bought the best materials from other cities and abroad for this construction to build it as quickly as possible. During the Zand dynasty, it used to be the king’s main palace, while in Qajar dynasty it was used as residence of the Prince Abdolhosein Mirza Farmanfarma, the governor of Fars province. The miniatures in the citadel was renovated by his order. After the fall of the Qajar dynasty the building converted into a prison and the paintings covered. In 1971, it was owned and organized by Heritage Organization to be turned to a museum. The renovation of the castle began in 1977.
Karim Khan citadel is located in Shahrdari Square. It has an area of 4,000 m2 and is located in the middle of a 12,800 m2 connection. The Citadel of Karim Khan consists of four tall walls with four 14 m tall round shaped, brick towers at each corner. Each 12 m wall is canalized from inside and is 3 feet thick at the base and 2.8 thick at the top. The design of the citadel combines military and residential architecture as it served as both home of Karim Khan as well as the military center of the dynasty. James Edward Alexander in 1827 described the citadel surrounded as a “deep wet ditch”. The tiling at the entrance represent legendary stories of the Qajar era.
